Re: ALTERNATOR OPTIONS + COOL R80G/S 800 Watt Alternator Picture

What's your definition of a long excursion? Are you out in the middle of nowhere or hoteling it each night? Does your bike have a voltmeter? My wife and I tour on our Airheads. I do take a rotor and diode board along on long tours. I've had two rotors fail in almost 300,000 Airhead miles. Since carr...

Re: Question about Charging Light

If you have a multimeter, measure the voltage at the battery with the bike off, with a good lead acid fully charged battery you should get 6.4V (but if its 6.2, don’t worry too much about it). With the bike running with the lights off; you should see over 6.8V, maybe even as high as 7.3V, then it’s ...

Re: Pots and pans clanging in forks of '85 R80 RT

The rubber bumper was discontinued for the 1981 model year. Also if his year is correct, the 85 R80 should be a Monolever bike with the later 38 mm forks.

Take it apart and look!

Re: 1977 R100/7, or?

Like others have stated, it’s dressed up to look like an R90S. The 32mm Bing carbs and single brake give it away that it’s not. It’s hard to tell how nice the paint job is from the photos. There’s not a whole heck of a lot of cosmetic differences between a 76 R90S and a 77 R100S, screw-in cap on the...

Re: Neutral light always on

Is this a new development on the bike? If this occurred right after the transmission was apart, then the switch wasn’t set up correctly. It just gets bent into position. There is no real “switch” like in a later Airhead. Inside the transmission cover there is a metal plate that sticks out towards th...

Re: Krauser saddlebag key question

Check with Max BMW first. They have a key page in their “catalog” which isn’t the fiche. 43 shows in stock.

Re: Another R90/6 electrical question.

The old Bosch relays with metal covers can be opened, look at the bottom of the relay and you’ll see twisted parts of the cover, gently untwist and the cover will come off. Some of the plastic ones are bonded, others have little clips. Oftentimes you can see burned contacts, try cleaning to get by, ...

Re: R90/6 slipping in low gear

Does the slipping occur in all gears or certain gears? In the 5 speed transmission first and second gears share dogs, third and fourth gear share dogs, and fifth has its own set. Try to narrow it down. Dogs have broken off gears before. If it occurs in all gears, then I’d suspect something has broke...
