Staying with the stock R65 paint colors

I would say it is your call. Depends on you stand on "restoration" and what you plan on doing with the bike in the future. Of course, you want to be happy and proud of your ride. If you're going to keep the bike for a long time, hey, do what you want. If you paint it some "weird"...

What intro would be complete without pictures?

Should I say "They all do that?" Well, sort of, but it's hard to know what you mean by a "huge" noise. The gear box can rattle at idle especially after the oil gets thinned out. People experiment with dino/synthetic/additives in order to promote better shifting. The rattle can be...

Correct valve settings for R65

I'd go for the 0.005 intake, but IMO, I'd stick closer to the 0.008 on exhaust. I found a service bulletin that came out in March 1982 (2051 11 022 82) for all R65 and R65LS models. It says 0.006 and 0.010 for the first 600 miles and then 0.004 and 0.008 after that. Personally, I like the larger set...

Correct valve settings for R65

From what I can tell, my Haynes lists 0.10mm/0.20mm intake/exhaust. But I've heard it might be better to use 0.15mm/0.20mm intake/exhaust. The exhaust clearance is more important that the intake as that's where the heat is the highest. The intake valves are "cooled" somewhat by the inrushi...

Bought the 81 R65 but it broke down already

If I knew how to reach Don I would love to attend at
least part of it. I live about 85 miles from Deming. Anybody have a phone #?

There was an email address in the link that Darryl gave...

Bought the 81 R65 but it broke down already

Here is a good discussion of the $2000 o-ring: http://home.jps.net/~snowbum/Oil.htm I'm not sure about the R65 as it is a little different in various areas. There's a canister within the engine which has a sharp lip on it which can cut into the large white o-ring. The oil filter fits inside this can...

Registry

There's a registry of older BMWs at http://www.micapeak.com/reg/bikes/oldBMWs/. You might be able to get a sense of where you bike falls by comparing to other VINs. In addition, on the Yahoo /2 forum, there's a database of bikes listed. The few VINs listed near yours are: 1966 R69S - 6622xx 1969 R69...

Vech in Missisippi at Benchmark Works also carries the bearings.
