Re: What old BMW gearheads dream of....

This hits home - I'm doing an R71 right now, as is shown in the picture...

Vech I hope you're thinking about other things, these days :) Cheers.

Re: Headlight bucket with scoop/dish?

My anecdote:

Dished bucked was needed originally for R25/3 to clear the horn, which was mounted up under the headlight bucket, and then it was used on other late-year plunger bikes (and into the "/2"s, too?) either due to over-supply or streamlining of parts pipeline.

Re: R26 - Not Hitting Full Advance

Nice detective work Kurt!

Some advance units required two different length springs - 9mm and 11mm? If so here, check if someone replaced with two 9mm maybe? Good luck. Singles need all the advance they can get :p

Re: R50. 1955. Engine breather

> However I’ve noticed a little oil bubbling out of the dip stick. If you run one of these engines with the filler cap removed you will get oil blowing out (right?). The breather system relies on pressure pulses to do the right thing (duh), pressure will find the paths of least resistance which coul...

Mal, IMG_2120.jpg Pistons from RRC Tuning ... IMG_2116.jpg 77.92 IMG_2121.jpg Translated from German (Google Translate app is amazing): 0.08 - 0.10mm clearance, measured at the widest part on these pistons. Speaking of translations, I'm pretty sure "Sp" is short for Spiel, or "play&qu...

Re: Understanding piston dimensions when re-boring oversize

Hi, I was recently stuck (no pun intended) with my R71 project on a too-tight interference fit with the replacement cam and timing gear set and spent some time noodling on thermal expansion, as I galled the first set :( The solution was to used dry ice to freeze the cam -- the hot gear slipped on no...

Re: R 51/2 side bags

Nice!

There are the bulbous "enduro" bags, and then also the Craven rectangle ones (Silver Arrows or the larger Golden Arrow) with the metal strap bands. There are probably others. Does that help? :)

Re: 52 R25/2 kick start noise/trans issue

Hello! Welcome! Pretty sure those two screws hold the shift fork upper ends in place (one for each of the two forks), but I'm only looking at the parts diagrams - I've never been into one of these single transmissions. https://www.bmwbike.com/index.php?e=mhs "Online Shop", then "1-Cyl...

Re: /2 Crank nose bearing advice needed from experienced engine assemblers.

Random thought: C3, or Clearance level 3 bearings I believe were introduced way after these bikes. The bikes came with C0 or low-tolerance specs, I presume. This is what I tried to find for my R71 project I'm doing, but they're not easy to find - and often just ordering a "6004" (or whatev...

Re: R50/2 Crank compatibility?

In my experience, if you do find a crank it's more than likely going to need overhauled anyways.

I'd still like to know who is doing cranks these days. I know Brent is, but who else? Industry secret??
