Re: restoration advice for newbie

I would encourage you to consider doing it yourself. I did this with my '68 R50US in 1994,a "rolling basket case", long before the Barrington manual was available; including rebuilding the motor down to the slingers, having the frame powder coated(by a local Hell's Angel, a trip in itself!...

Re: R69S Dover White on BAT

Of course slingers fill from running, but my point is that oil just sitting can form sludge from condensation and oxidation, which when the bike is actually run would make the slingers more likely to fill with crud. At 4000 miles over 56 years this bike on average would have been run less than 100 m...

Re: R69S Dover White on BAT

I wonder if this bike would actually need a slinger service. Given its very low mileage (if authentic), it obviously had to sit for long periods between rides, which (I would think) could lead to more sludge formation than otherwise expected-unless the owner was religious about oil changes on a time...

Re: Advice on windshield for my R75/5 please

This is another alternative which I have found to work very well-a Puig 0869H. I have this dark smoke on my R50 and a light smoke (essentially clear) on my Kawi W650. It gives decent wind protection on the freeway but is pretty unobtrusive. It's very cost effective (I paid about $45 on Amazon, it's ...

Re: ATF in your gas tank??

In the vintage Ford flathead V-8 world, use of Marvel Mystery Oil as a fuel additive is akin to a religion. Those motors are notorious for developing sticking valves, and the MMO (which is mostly mineral oil and mineral spirits solvent) does really seem to prevent that problem, I've used it forever ...

Re: Bar End Flasher 6V FESTOON LED

I fully appreciate Vech's comment about viewing LEDs off angle, the ones I mentioned in my post ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XR2RG5G?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1) act more like a point source of light and are pretty visible straight on and off angle-I've attached a couple of pics to...

George, to my eye the amber color looks good, just a lot brighter than with the incandescent bulb

Re: Bar End Flasher 6V FESTOON LED

I recently used a flasher like this one on my '68 R50 bar end Hella turn signals: https://www.mikesxs.net/sparck-moto-universal-two-pin-flasher-relay.html It's two prong, no ground wire. My bike has a 12 V conversion, but this works on either 6 or 12V. It is polarity sensitive, I had to switch the l...

Re: 2 bikes for sale - ‘65 R50 and ‘65 R27

This is really a bizarro-world result; how an R 27 could be worth almost twice as much as what looks like a nice rider-quality R 50 is beyond me. I've owned an R 27 (my first bike, Dover white, in 1967) and 2 R 50's including my current 1968, and there's simply no comparison as to which is the bette...

Re: R69s ideal speed per gear?

"He compared it to the hotrod 4 wheeler of the day, the 911S, which also had a horsepower cam and a roller crank, and was also susceptible to bearing damage from lugging." The "old German guy"must have been referring to a 356 Porsche Carrera motor with a Hirth roller crank, the e...
