your R50

Jim, it would be helpful if you also had the Part Catalogue from BMW AG (you can get it through Benchmark Works) which "explodes" all, and I mean all, parts for you R 50. It is also the reference book for ordering parts from Benchmark Works. I have found it invaluable in taking apart diffe...

I agree with Kurt

Joe, welcome. I faced the same problem a few months back and did a rather thorough investigation of cleaning the slingers myself, including reading the Barrington manual and Vech's site. In the final analysis I elected to have the work done by a professional here in California and was glad I did so....

front hub cap

At some point in the life of by 1959 R 50, the front wheel hub cap was damaged and needs to be "stripped" and re-painted. Can someone kindly tell me what is the correct paint to use, and anything else I might need to know before I remove the front wheel.

Thanks

Robert

gas additives

What are everyone's thought on using an additive to the ethanol laced fuel for the pre-1960 bikes? My R 50 runs great, but I am starting to worry about nonleaded gas since i have just had the engine rebuilt.

gas petcock

The original petcock on my R50 has been replaced with a Karcoma petcock by the previous owner. Does this Karcoma have an internal screen or filter, and if not, would it be advisable to install a couple of filters in the gas lines to the carbs? The gas tank was completely cleaned and overhauled so th...

armature specs

David, thanks for the reply. The measurement I need is somewhat hard to describe. In your parts sketch it would be on the end of the armature (labelled "1"). There are two measurements needed: the first is the height of the winding (again, on the number 1 side), and the second is the diame...

generator armature measurement needed

Can anyone please supply me with the correct measurement for INSIDE diameter of the opening across the end (engine side) of the windings on the armature for a 17mm generator for a 1959 R 50? I estimated it to be about 1.45 inches, but I need to be sure so that in the re=winding of the armature the w...
