Rusty Tank Cleaning

I have a steel tank that is from one of my other bikes that was coated with an unknown liner by PO 15 years ago or so. After sitting half empty over winter (my bad) bad rust and gunk. I tried white vinegar for 3 days followed by muriatic acid for an hour or so and neutralized with baking soda and a ...

Sounds like ignition

Use a volt/ohm meter to verify that you have voltage to the points when getting no spark. Points must be open for this. Wiggle wires to see if anything changes. Use ohm meter to verify continuity to ground when points close. Often a bit of oily film can interfere with this especially with new points...

Thanks for the compliments

Thanks for the compliments and glad the pics help. As far as powder coating the shock tubes, remember that they are aluminum and will not stand sand blasting. If you plan to paint the rest of the sheet metal parts just include them. If not I would just sand, prime and paint with a rattle can gloss b...

Also Alcohol

I use common rubbing alcohol as a lubricant for both sliding on and off all kinds of rubber parts. Just a few drops to wet the surface and it will slide right on or off. Soon evaporates and leaves no residue or damage. Works good.

Bing Leak

I feel your pain Mully. About my first post on this excellent forum was about just this problem. I got all the same advise about how to work around it and my reply was that I hate stuff that doesn't work right. The problem is that the float chamber floods. The point of exit is most often the air scr...

Guid Clean out

R. D.- It solved my problem after several rebuilds including going to lever tops and new floats. I simply used a variable speed drill (slow) and a 7/64 bit to clean out the guide hole on my 131/132 Bings. It is not a precision fit so don't worry, just don't remove original casting material. Carb cle...

Race removal etc.

The bearings come out easily but the best way I know to get the races out is to run a small MIG weld bead around the inner race. Once cool the race should fall out. Of course you will need to replace the bearing sets. I got the bell gear off the drive shaft with a good 3 jaw gear puller and heat to ...

Float needle giude

I've been there too. After all that has been said about leaking floats and lapping the seats be sure to clean the bottom guide in the float chamber. I use a bit 1/64 larger than the needle. You will be surprised at how much sediment and pot metal corrosion can accumulate in 50 years. It causes a suc...

Tap

That is an expensive tap. I don't recall the exact size in question but if all you are doing is cleaning the threads up You might want to consider getting a metric thread file. It will have all common pitches and works well on large diameter male female threads. You could get a metric thread pitch g...
