Re: Cleaning the engine, transmission and final drive

Always nice to see another Airhead riding when the going gets tough. My 82RT, aka Battle Bike, keeps me on the road November-May up here in NH and has seen a lot of salt. The rust on the swingarm finally got to the point I removed it for a quick media blast/examination and powder coat if it is solid...

I don't want to spend $100's on straitening the frame before knowing I have a running engine to put in it. Fiscal prudence more than peace of mind.

Running engine W/O generator

Hi all, I want to test run my rebuilt R27 engine before sending the frame off for straitening. Due to a lack of wiring I want to just want to hook up a basic ignition circuit to kick it over and see if it runs. NOTE: R27 IS BATTERY IGNITION! This means that I would not have the generator hooked up. ...

OK, this makes sense. All my other bikes are battery ignition. I spent quality time rereading the ignition chapter in the barrington manual and reading the whole Rinkes book. The advancer unit is properly indexed to the magneto. I was hoping to discover the magneto had moved on the end of the cam af...

Yup--proper magneto and point

Yup--proper magneto and point adjusting procedure adhered to here :). I probably will do the chopstick TDC method first. It just dumbfounds me that it ever ran--never mind so flawlessly and reliably-unless everything was nicely timed but not in alignment with the flywheel markings. It's going to be ...

So Jerad, did you solve the problem? I have an identical issue. My R60/2 is a 'starts on the first kick' bike. I pulled the transmission to do the input seal and decided to do some tune-up stuff. Timed the magneto (it was only off by a degree or so) then set the points then attempted to time the poi...

frame straightening

Hi all, Anyone know of anyone in the northeast currently doing good frame straightening? New England, NY, NJ, PA maybe a little further. I have a R27 that I think someone drove into a wall--and not straight on. I know about the gentlemen on the west coast that do great work and will ship out there i...

valve springs

Hi all,
Any opinions on which way the valve springs on my 61 R27 should be put on? They appear to be slightly progressive (slightly tighter ) at one end. Should the tighter end be on the bottom, near the head, or on top, near the keepers, or does it matter?
Thanks.
