Re: Oil pan question

I think that may be a Bowman oil pan...way you can tell is the Bowman has a hole for an oil temp sender as well as the oil drain plug hole. Nice ancient accessory item if so. I seem to recall the oil temp sender from a 6 volt VW will fit?...others will chime in?

Re: R26 Schorsch Meier seat placement

It's really rare to see that gasket between the fender and shock mount, I think they were deleted in the later years of production, are often lost/deleted when the shade tree mechanic works on the bike, and I thought they were some sort of fiber or gasket material and not rubber? They were available...

Re: 1969 R69S Advice to a new comer

Nice motorcycle! I'd drain the motor oil, refill, and ride the bike (daytime, no headlamp!) You don't need a battery. Put 20-30 miles on it, see if you like old BMW...then, follow the very good advice given above about costs/effort to restore it? Please don't even consider to part such a nice machin...

Re: R71 hot start problem

I suspect your coil is shot, but do a very easy and fun experiment: run the bike (in nice weather, no rain, no wet roads) without the front cover in place. This keeps the possibly failing coil cool, keeps it from shorting out as when hot. If the hot starting problem is solved...just get a new coil! ...

Re: corrosion of floating chamber of carb

I used to use "JB Weld" which is a kind of dark grey epoxy that if visible looks just like the pot metal carb body, and then cover the JB W with a protective layer of gas tank sealer, POR?, to protect the JBW from gasoline...you note the conical shape of the bottom of the float chamber? Th...

...it will definitely come through the cover hole: just talk nice to it!..
You don't need the tab if you realize it's just to index the cover to the correct place on the carb: you can see where the tab broke off, and the slot in the carb where it should fit...

Re: Type of carburators for BMW R51/2

..22mm Bings are hard to find; your lucky to have them. If the float bowls are rotted out they can be repaired; if the flanges are warped they can be trued..although expensive, wear parts, slide needles, jets, etc. can be replaced...
