Re: R71 hot start problem

Poking around on Google suggests this is not unique to just old motorcycles, but happens to old tractors and cars too, especially the 6V variety. I'm assuming your R71 is still running 6V? I think your part# is for a 6V coil, which would need a ballast resister if you've upgraded to a 12V system. I ...

Re: 2024 on an R27

I just ordered three new inline filters yesterday to replace the ones currently on my bikes. I believe the ones I have were installed by Vech at Bench Mark Works when the bikes were restored. As tiny as the ports are on the jets in these Bing carbs, I'll never run without a filter. I don't know what...

Re: R51/3 clutch adjustment screw

According the the Salis Parts site: Part # 07119921056 Nut M6

https://www.bmwclassicmotorcycles.com/p ... rt-one-26/

It might be easier to go to a good hardware store with the bolt in hand and find a good quality nut that fits it.

Re: Trip Meter won't reset

The best sort of repair : a bit of effort, you learn something and it costs nothing. Well done. But about running until you go on to reserve, when I rebuilt my 50/2, I ran it until reserve, switched over and ... nothing. The tank was empty and I had replaced the two plastic tubes the wrong way roun...

Re: Carburetor slide worn from idle screw

Swapping them did work. No rattle. And FINALLY, the new jets and needles resolved the issue where best idle was with the mixture screws all the way in! So even though I had cleaned the old idle jets twice, and thought they were good, there was a clear different in the amount of light I could seen th...

Carburetor slide worn from idle screw

I got the carburetor rebuild kit from Bing to replace all the jets and needles on the R60/2. As I was swapping out the main jet needles, I noticed significant wear in the end of the slider piston from the idle adjust screw. I'm sure this is normal since the screw is much harder metal, but it's almos...

Re: Trip Meter won't reset

It took getting quite a bit more aggressive than I would have imagined. Needlenose against the bezel was starting to deform the bezel, even with some thin cardboard as a buffer. I ended up with medium sized vice grips with a rag around the knob, pulling up and twisting, gradually working it loose un...

Re: Trip Meter won't reset

The 1.44 number on the dial would indicate that it is to be mated with an R60 and sidecar...the rear drive would be 27:7. The speedo pic with 1.44 is my R60/2 with sidecar. It does have the correct 27:7 final drive. I have the solo final drive in a box with a handful of other spare parts. I had dou...

Re: Trip Meter won't reset

I'm pretty sure that's not the original speedometer, it should only go to 90 on an R27. My '64-built R27 has a trip meter. They can be rebuilt, I'm not sure how much they are used. Mine was in pretty sad shape and inop when I got the bike, for about $300 including shipping it looks and works like n...

Re: Trip Meter won't reset

Well that makes me wonder if I have the correct speedo on my R60. It does have a sidecar and I assume the speedometer ratio is matched to the sidecar final drive, but I also have the solo final drive to swap out, should I decide to remove the sidecar.
