Where you are located is also a factor. If you are in the USA, there are a number of reputable experts on both coasts and a handful scattered in between. Be prepared to be on a waiting list.

Poking around on Google suggests this is not unique to just old motorcycles, but happens to old tractors and cars too, especially the 6V variety. I'm assuming your R71 is still running 6V? I think your part# is for a 6V coil, which would need a ballast resister if you've upgraded to a 12V system. I ...

I just ordered three new inline filters yesterday to replace the ones currently on my bikes. I believe the ones I have were installed by Vech at Bench Mark Works when the bikes were restored. It might be easier to go to a good hardware store with the bolt in hand and find a good quality nut that fits it.

The best sort of repair : a bit of effort, you learn something and it costs nothing. Well done. The 1.44 number on the dial would indicate that it is to be mated with an R60 and sidecar...the rear drive would be 27:7. The speedo pic with 1.44 is my R60/2 with sidecar.
