Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

The smoke is from the left side, the low side when on side stand, and only upon start up. As you recall, the bike is a bear to get on the center stand. I inspected the stand and it is working properly. If I roll the front wheel up onto a 2x4 plank, it's much easier to get on the center stand. I thin...

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

The bike smokes a bit after sitting a week or so, but only on start up. No real smoke after first minute or so. A compression/leakdown test is on my list of thing to do.
Will post numbers when completed.
the bike just turned 40K miles. I have no reason to doubt the mileage.

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

So I’m up to 550 miles without any real issues. I keep tweaking the carbs and idling great. The dash brake light keeps coming on. I pull the gas tanks and fiddle with the wires on the float for fluid level and the light goes off only to come on again. Not leaking fluid and front brake works fine. I ...

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

One of my morning rituals is to read email, skim the news, read the forums then go to Bring a Trailer followed by the weather. Not that I would bid on anything but I like keeping up on prices both there and other sites. A lot of neat stuff goes up for auction there and I only wish I had the money a...

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

Where are you located again, maybe as the weather clears, I can ride down and perhaps give a hand, I am in Rochester NY. St. I'm in Youngstown OH. As mentioned before, We have a summer place at the Chautauqua Institution. During the 9 week summer season they limit car traffic and prohibit motorcycl...

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

Another thing you could measure is the amount of sag with you on the bike. I think it should be around 1/3 of the total front end travel. Measure that by putting a zip tie around the fork tube right above the fork slider. You would need to completely unload the front end and push the zip tie down a...

And if you haven’t done so yet, disconnect the battery BEFORE removing the front engine cover. Apparently the top of the cover can touch the diode board and short it out if the battery is connected.

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

If you measured the amount you put in, you don't need to check it with a rod. Oil level has nothing to do with spring tension or ride height just spring rebound dampening. Not to be a pain but you are certain you put everything back together correctly? I would assume there would be more tension on ...

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

I did not disassemble the fork. I loosened the bottom nut but did it take it all the way off. The oil drained out slowly.

Re: Just bought a R/80 at estate auction

Changed the fork oil. Only had 4 oz in each fork. Refilled with the proper amount and still have about 3-4 inches of play when the bike is on the center stand. I can grab the front wheel and lift and the forks slide up. Is that normal? Or still low on oil. I measured 8.25 oz. Did not measure with a ...
