Re: Fuel

This summer, I did an 8,700 m solo r/t from Mass to Alaska on a recently rebuilt R 60/2 engine. I started off using 87 octane, but noticed a significant improvement with higher octanes and by the northern plains was only using 93. Much greater hillclimbing ability and less knocking.

Re: ‘57 Pillion seat mount to luggage rack

I’m not where I can send a picture, but in my experience it was just a matter of using the existing three nuts welded to the underside of the luggage rack, and bolting the seat through those welded nuts. If I recall, they’re M8x1.25. In my rack, the thread of the nuts needed chasing, due to paint or...

R60/2 routine carb adjustments for altitude

This summer I’ll be riding an R60/2 on a long tour that will go from sea-level to several high western passes, including the 11,000’ Bear Tooth Pass. Is there a routine way, perhaps even a formula, to adjust the carbs in order to optimize their performance at altitude? Many thanks.

Re: Breather bolt

This info is available by a search on this thread, but the posted answer… by members far more knowledgeable than me, is that it is a way of relieving gear-oil pressure from a hot engine/transmission, thus avoiding seal damage.

Re: Coil lead screw needed

There are a number of fine vendors that advertise in the VBMO magazine that, as part of their routine work, probably change out those coils weekly. Why not check to see if one set-screw might be available from their copper-scrap pile?

Re: Hama Locking gas cap

My advice is to try a different locksmith… the good ones are amazing at deciphering any lock they encounter. I brought in a locked Craven Concorde pannier from the early 70’s and half an hour later the guy had six keys he’d cut for me.

Re: Charging devices on a 6V R60/2 system

Thanks, Tommy. It seems like that would give the generator plenty of capacity to handle a 6V-12V step-up converter for device charging. For long-distance, multi-day touring that will be welcome. Thanks again for the advice.

Re: Charging devices on a 6V R60/2 system

The factory manual lists all the wattages of the original incandescent bulbs. The maximum usage would presumably be when the bike is being used at night with the high beam on, the brake light illuminated, and a turn-signal illuminated. (I haven’t forgotten the horn, but I just didn’t see a wattage o...

Re: Charging devices on a 6V R60/2 system

Thanks, I do have a sidecar receptacle under the seat, so that’s a good idea. Are the plugs that go into the sidecar receptacles still available? Were there ever handlebar mounted switches to control power to sidecar-mounted lights? As for the wattage numbers, I guess I’ll have to sharpen my pencil ...
