The "shake the wheel" test is something that Duane worked up and likely makes good sense in terms of how the bearings work. I think we can agree that having the bearings loose and/or tight are not good for these bearings. Even a skoosh loose is not good from how the things work. So one has...

If the play or ability to spin disappears at around 10 ft-lbs, then your preload is wrong on the bike. The way I see it is that as you tighten the axle nut, you are squeezing the bearing stack together. If the play is gone at 10 that means that the stack is collapsing and binding too soon. Thanks. My manual is from 2000. I was looking at the exploded view of the carbs. But I did find the "lever top kit" info on page 18 of my manual.

I looked at the Bing manual for Type 120 carbs. They don't show a part like this. Is it something new?

Probably going to be around 800cc. I seem to recall that I needed to buy two bottles because they were 750cc each.
