Shorting front cover / I'm embarassed

'69 R50US, stock 6v, new emerald island coil, new points, original advance unit Last summer I was trying solve an overly retarded timing issue, running the bike with the front cover off, adjusting the points gap, check with timing light (external 12v battery), adjust, drop feeler gauge, curse, repea...

Re: R60/2 Ugly Battery

I run a Blitz AGM battery on my R50, works and looks great. Spendy though. Got from boxer2valve: https://www.boxer2valve.com/6v-gel-battery-0811.html they also sell a hollow battery case and era-looking Bosch stickers: https://www.boxer2valve.com/battery-case-12v-conversion.html Pricey too, but I li...

Re: '69 R50US Timing Question

Hi Kurt Thank you- that makes sense, maintain the 'abriz' point, if I understand that term correctly. Your point about two wrongs making a right is well taken- exactly the sort of tail-chasing I'm trying to avoid as I'm learning. Re-centered the mag body to my original scribe marks, confirmed rotor ...

Re: '69 R50US Timing Question

Great video James. The bit of moving the flywheel with the magneto buzzer attached- that really helped me to understand the relationship of the points/advance unit/timing marks and dwell. One of those things you can read ten times but seeing a demo makes it clear. Kurt- thank you for the help. Timin...

'69 R50US Timing Question

Been combing the search for info, apologies if this has been covered- Timing light (using aux 12v battery) shows OT mark at idle, and at midrange, no marks visible at advance, no RPM shows either S or F mark with inductive clamp on either HT lead. Timing light pointed at advance unit shows the weigh...

Re: Batteries

Went through this same search recently for my R50, and decided I was tired of lead acid.

A bit spendy, but for an AGM alternative that looks good (if not correct)- and most importantly- black:

US Fork Tapered Roller Bearing Conversion mystery

R50US, update to tapered roller steering head bearings- surprised to find the adapter rings not to be an interference fit with the stem. The stem has a 28mm OD and the adapter ring ID is the same +/- the tolerance of my cheapo digital calipers, but the ring slides to the bottom of the stem without r...

R50US Steering Head Bearing Outer Race Removal

Hi all, Apologies if this answer is out there, I've searched diligently but may have missed: Does anyone have the tool rec for removing the outer steering head bearing races from the stem of a '69 R50 US? The Kukko expanding puller recommended by boxer2valve- while a beautiful tool- is far too rich ...

Re: Stripped idle jet plug!!!

I'm sure this is long since resolved, but posting in hope of helping somebody in the future: Call or email Charlie at Bing: 620-767-7844 (TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE) bing@bingcarburetor.com I had the same threads fail ('69 R50US). There are about 3 threads on the plug in the first place. Sent my carb body...
