I think the shown Zündapp 601 used chain gearbox (4 sets of duplex chain) instead of gears. Apparently more efficient and quieter - though my listening to them back in the day didn't substantiate that...

Apart from the home made or adapted front cover, this is quite an elegant solution! If you intend riding the bike for a long time, I would NOT go back to the R26 6V system.
