/2 or not /2?

I had always read that the /2 series went from 1960 to 1969. I know that many people call any pre-1970 BMW a /2, but I'm looking for clarification on the official designation. The reason I'm confused is that I just got done reading the Summer 2023 issue of the Classic BMW Motoradder Magazine (yeah, ...

Re: Charging devices on a 6V R60/2 system

So, interestingly, it appears the generator can’t even keep up to regular maximum draw (assuming incandescent bulbs) and would have to draw from the battery to keep everything illuminated. It doesn't keep up. I ride with my headlight on bright all the time. Bright being a relative term on a 6V syst...

Re: running rich

And one other thing that I had happen to me while riding, was I lost one cylinder completely at speed. When I stopped and pulled the plug on the dead side, it was JET BLACK and sooted up. It turned out that the main jet, had unscrewed itself from the needle jet, and had fallen out, and was laying i...

Re: 3.5” tires With 25/8 final drive

It’s interesting that on this bike with the 1,12 speedometer and 25/8 FD, and 4.00 rear tire, the speedometer is right on with with a gps. I’m guessing it will be off when I switch to the 3.5 rear. I will have to mount my old iPhone again as a Speedo until I get used to the variation.

Re: 3.5” tires With 25/8 final drive

Is there a way to tell if a speedo matches a certain FD other than how it reads against a GPS? The July 2005 issue BMW VMCA News has an article listing typical final drives and speedometer matches. If you can open it up, it's here: https://vintagebmw.org/vmca/v2n3/index.php?hash=9679acd8a98c7bdfcaf...

Re: 3.5” tires With 25/8 final drive

You may enjoy this article, https://w6rec.com/bmw-motorcycle-neutral-steering/ . A great deal of handling is related to tire size. Thank you. Great article. I’ve had a 4.00 on the back ever since I’ve owned the bike. I’m excited to try the new tires. It’s -17 F here this morning, so It will be seve...

Re: 3.5” tires With 25/8 final drive

Are you sure that you mean 33/11?, which I believe was used later on /7s but not before that, the original rear ratio for the 1956-60 R60 was 32/11 (2.909:1), while the contemporary R50 and R69 used 35/11 (3.18:1), which was replaced by the 25:8 in 1961, if your R60 has the original speedo, it shou...

Re: 3.5” tires With 25/8 final drive

Could be. I should have said this bike came to me originally with a 33/11. I don’t know that it came from the factory that way. At any rate, everything I can find says 3.5 front and rear, so I’ll just try them and see how it goes. I have the original owners manual, I’ve been through it twice, and I ...

3.5” tires With 25/8 final drive

I’m ordering new tires for a 1958 R60. Since I have had it, it has had a 110/90 on the rear, and a 100/90 on the front. From what I'm reading, I’m going to change that to 100/90 or 3.5 front and rear. My question comes from the fact that I have changed the final drive from the original 33/11 to a 25...

Re: Source for Steering Head Spanner

Thanks Vech. I had plugged the number into Max, but nothing came up. But yes, I see it on the old BMW website, and I placed the order. You know my brother, Bob Clement, he is visiting me in Colorado. This used to be his bike. I put him to slave labor helping me do this job today. He had all the tool...
