I was looking at the cheap leather side bags on eBay (typically from India) and they have two leather straps on each. I was thinking I could just strap the leather straps around the rear rack but you could also make mounts cheap as well.

That was my idea. Have not done it yet.

If your repainting you are spending the money so strip them. It’s not that hard! I had my powdercoater strip them for me. He used paint stripper and followed up with media blasting. I just picked up an R50S and it has rear shock cartridges pictured below. I never saw shock cartridges like these.
