With the purchase of the Dixi automobile works in Eisenach, Thuringia in 1928, BMW came into ownership of steel stamping machinery. This they put to use on the R11/R16 models to eliminate the continuing problems with the old brazed tubular frames that had a tendency to crack, especially under hard sidecar usage. Motor numbers are arranged into the model years and "Series Numbers" as follows:
 Build Year  Series  Engine Numbers
1929*I60001 - 63988
1930I63989 - 64500

1932III67501 - 68920
1933IV69001 - 70122
1934V70123 - 73985
*) These motor numbers also correspond to the 1929 R62 engine numbers
