Wheel bearing issue.

Post by brettironbutt »

Wheel bearing replaced 900miles ago, rear wheel. It was loose side to side. They were put in by hagget when I had the wheels relaced. I put in the new ones and fixed the preload. It was very loose. Lapped the wedding ring. Broke in the new engine, all good. I am now at the edge of Patagonia, and the rear hub gets hot. The hub started rubbing on the final drive. That was the sound that alerted me to the problem. My contact here thinks I had tightened the axel too tight. I don’t know, there was no play and I could spin it a revolution. I’ll replace the bearings tomorrow morning in Port Montt, but I’m nervous I have a different, additional problem. Sending now third attempt. Pics to follow.

Yes, when you tighten the axles front or rear you only need 30 lb.ft. or so. Never crank down on the axle nut, it will stress out the bearings. I just cinch them down. There was a great write up in this at Duane Ashermans site, he talked about repeated wheel bearing failures from motorcycle shops that treated BMW like any other bike and when changing tires , etc., they would crank down HARD on the axle nuts and the tapered bearings would go bad quickly. Just cinch them down.

Editorial comment (with nothing to add regarding the question). I have to say Brett, I’m envious of your ambitious riding adventures on an antique machine. If so inclined, I’d be apprehensive to do the same on a newish Honda!

Carry on and know that at least a few here enjoy reading of your adventures, mechanical and otherwise.

Sorry for the empty pics. Wifi here is super spotty. Here are a few pictures while I have good service. This is the shop I found in Chillan. The owners father still rides his R50/2. He came by and showed off his rig.

This was the makeshift place I fixed the wheel bearings. An older lady let me use her carport, and a friend from the guy I met in Chillan helped me. He cut off a piece of junk lawnmower handle to make the 4in spacer. The old wheel bearings I had installed probably were ok, I just had tightened the axel too hard when I installed them. I don’t know why…. Another thing I have learned!
