Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners

Because of broken tabs for the original ignition switch, I installed a switch like the Rocky Point upgrade. The switch is too deep in the bucket and will not allow the headlight reflector to be installed. In the instructions for the upgrade, it mentions this possible problem but offers no options. Does anyone know of a different reflector (possibly the one from Vintage Beemer Parts) that will allow clearance. Or is there another switch option? Any opinions/options from those more knowledgeable than me are appreciated.

What do you have for a headlight, the H-4 with the flat lens or the stock lamp with with the convex lens? They use different reflectors.

Using the stock headlight and reflector. Willing to try the H-4 type if it will work with 6 volts.

My R 60/2 used to be fitted with the 6 volt H-4 conversion and had no problem with the Rocky Point switch, but it was tight. Then I bought an LED bulb with heat sync. That required the standard socket which required the standard reflector and lens. That did interfere with the switch. Tomorrow Ill go visit the bike which is still in winter storage and see if I can get some photos that will help you.

Hi Dave, I just noticed that you said your switch is 'like' the Rocky Point switch. Mine is a Rocky Point switch; if your switch is different I don't know if this will be helpful, but I hope it is.

Picture one shows the switch installed. It's retained by a hose clamp which makes for easy in and out. The switch interferes with the standard reflector.
Picture two shows a shallow divot pressed into the back of the reflector to create clearance for the switch.
Picture three shows the front of the reflector after the divot was created. It doesn't have noticeable impact on the lighting.
Picture four is the LED bulb with heat sync that I wanted to use. I bought it from Mike Benoit. It's brighter than the H-4 bulb but doesn't focus properly with the old lens. If I did a lot of night riding I'd be looking for a better solution.

When I had the H-4 conversion in place there was no issue with the Rocky Point switch. If your switch is the same size that might work for you as well. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for checking. I am afraid to modify the reflector as the surface is not in really great shape. Will probably get the H-4 conversion even though I do not plan to do any night riding on this old/slow bike. Did you get yours from Mike Benoit? My switch is the same as the Rocky Point one and I got a spacer separately. Will make my own wiring harness. Thanks for your help.
