A few months ago we remembered that the Quail Motorcycle Gathering was celebrating the category of "Custom Bikes" and we wanted to build a vintage BMW for the category with the theme "blacked out bike with stainless hardware". So we grabbed a few empty cardboard boxes and began to fill them with a selection of good used parts from our inventory shelves. In went a frame, non-matching engine block, a big Hoske tank, some vintage Tomaselli moto-cross bars and magura levers...a little of this and a little of that. We built a crankshaft, ordered new pistons and a lot of new parts. The cases were inspected, blasted, carefully masked and treated with high temp powder coating. We've built many motors with this high temp powder and it is durable stuff. No issues with overheating. (Somebody always mentions it.) After careful machining as to not scratch the paint, we build the motor, transmission and final drive using all new bearings. A vape 12v charging system powers the amber halogen headlamp and GPS (no cables) speedometer. The threads and bearing pockets in the frame were tapped out and the chassis assembled. All the black parts went together nicely with all new stainless hardware, including the blacked out authentic Hella bar end flashers. We welded up some custom straight pipes and ceramic-coated them...in black of course. The bodywork, including the Hoske tank and hand fabricated fenders, have all metal filler bodywork and are powder coated. The stripes are flat black and hard to see in the photos, but add a cool dimension to the bike. The bicycle horn and skull-ignition-key add a touch of whimsy. A Corbin black leather saddle and period Reynolds front and rear crash bars provide a nice plate to put your butt, and your feet. It was a big hit at the Quail and it is a blast to ride. Cheers!
