Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners

Got a few updates parts are all painted and pin striped. I painted the strips and cleared them I know the original ones were hand painted but that’s not something I’m comfortable of doing. So please forgive me in advance for straying from the original path. After painting the tank the gas cap was not going to be acceptable had several dents a beat up. So I took it apart and taped the dents and sanded it and buffed it out. After I make up some new baffles gaskets and reroll the bottom edge I will finish buffing it out. Was not sure how it would come apart but figured I couldn’t use it that way so far so good. Will post finished cap.
Got the wheels bearing all set to repack with grease and reinstall. Got new brakes shoe linings got the dirty work done. Now the fun begins.

Looking good! The gas cap dissection is cool!! Always wondered about the construction, but never imagined it being that elaborate! Enjoy the process!!

Making some progress

Been working on the bike to make it a roller to move around in the shop while working on the motor.

Been debating on what to do with the motor. Well after much procrastinating it’s tear it apart time and glad I did. Found a real problem with one cylinder looks like at one time something was on top of the piston see pictures. Someone must have removed it and put it back together and ran it. Once I pulled the piston I seen the ring groves were pushed down and stuck the rings in the piston. Cylinders are standard and look pretty good considering. But I sent them to machine shop to over bored 1 or 2 oversize whatever it takes and new pistons. Man those factory pistons are a bit pricey. Also got the motor apart and see why the slinger service is so important.

Got the motor back together and installed in the frame. Waiting for the cylinders and pistons to be delivered from the machine shop. Soda blasted the heads and lapping the valves also waiting for new insulating washers for under the valve springs. The valve’s and guides look really good. And with some of the problems people have had with valve’s sticking in the guides I feel comfortable with reusing mine. I have read a lot of issues with tight valve guides on a lot of car sites.

Got my cylinders back and fitted to new pistons and rings. Big thanks to Mike over at Vintage Beemer parts fast quality service.
