64 R50 generator problem

I've had multiple gen problems.
My red light started flashing on. I found that the brushes were worn to the end.
I ordered a new set from MAX. after the third type shipped to me, i had a set that fit. They were hanging up in the carrier a little bit, so i sanded slightly with emery cloth, then cleaned the brushed and carriers with alcohol on swabs.
The light then went out.
When I would run the engine up to about 3k rpm (guessing) it would open the fuse to the battery.
I put my good fluke meter to measure voltage. about 7.2 volts steady.
I put my good fluke dc ammeter on, about 2.8 amps, steady.
When I slowly would it up, everything was steady, then POP, the fuse to battery plus would open. I could not record the peak.
I looked for corrupted wiring, since I was in there, but found none.
I have a new voltage regulator, from Vech's old stock at Max, but I don't want to throw parts at it. I'm not that type of guy.
Ive read the Doug Rinckes manual, but it seems lacking in this area.
Thank you for your time

I agree, what amp fuse do you have installed? It may not be heavy enough.

I agree, 20 amp is a big fuse for the bike. You have a DEAD short to ground somewhere.
