Got my battery covers painted…

I thought I would share my battery cover pictures with you guys. I purchased the bike without them as the PO doesn’t remember where he put them. (Dementia) I bought reproductions from Capitol Cycle and finished them in black. Two coats of primer, a coat of sealer, two coats of base coat, and four coats of clear, over the decals. Probably not the way the factory did it, but close enough.
Now I need my 100mm o rings to come in so I can put them on.

I tried to find paint to match the rest of the bike but nobody seemed to be able to help me. So black it is…

To be honest matching the exact color of bikes painted back then is difficult. Part of it is paint now has changed since then. I don't even know if you can get the same formula paint as back in the 70's, at least my paint guy says so.

The side covers were black. LOL, there are different shades of black just like different shades of white. I don't really know what the color code is for the R90S.

Anyway, they look good. St.

Thanks. They’re gonna be the shiniest thing on the bike, but when I refinish something I can’t help but to make it shiny. I like shiny stuff!

When you mount them see if you can get a small bungee cord to supplement the O-ring. O-rings fail and you lose one cover. The bungees seem to last forever; never had one break.

I have seen people drill a hole in them, and tie wrap them to the frame as well. LOL, it is always the right side that falls off and goes bye bye, the left is held in place by the lift handle. St.

Oh, it’s already gone! Brand new oring failed and right cover is lost. I’ve already purchased ANOTHER one, ordered the decals, and I have plenty of black paint and clear left over, so I’ll do this ALL AGAIN.
But trust me, there won’t be a silly oring holding them on from now on! I actually bought extra orings and have them in my on board tool kit for when the oring on the bike started to look old. ONE DAY. How old is THAT? I’m guessing the oring was rubbing on the battery hold down or something and it snapped. Oh well. Ya live and ya learn. Thanks for the small bungee idea, and the zip tie idea. I might use both!

I haven’t painted my new battery cover yet, but I did drill a 3/16 inch hole in the leading edge of each one and zip tie it to the frame. Black cover, black frame, black zip tie. You wouldn’t know it’s there if you didn’t look for it. Gonna try the small bungee on the top where the o ring belongs.
Thanks, guys!
