Question about S fairing components

I have a BMW S fairing, on my 1983 R100. The turn signal stalks, have a small alloy clip, or as BMW calls them, “caps”. One on either side, affixed to the inside of the fairing, on the stalk.
I had one go missing, and got a factory replacement. I can not determine how the alloy cap, stays affixed to the turn signal stalk, rubber bushing. It looks like the cap should stay in place, around the rubber bushing portion. If I push the slotted part onto the inside TS stalk, it doesn’t stay in place, just falls away from the bushing. I’ve attached a pic of the replacement part, as well as the left side stalk, with the cap in place and a picture of they right side, where the new part should go.

Can anyone here familiar with installing this part, please advise how to attach the cap, so that it stays in place?

Some info in the R90S fairing installation found in the Knowledge Base:

Thanks Kurt.

That link has some good info, but unfortunately, doesn’t explain how the “ caps “ get correctly installed.

The parts fiche is a bit confusing. The order of things doesn't appear to be the same on both sides. I wonder if that's really the case.

Can you take apart the other side to determine how it's put together? Perhaps the eccentric bushing slipped through the fairing so it doesn't mate properly to the clip, or a portion of the eccentric wore away so that the clip no longer can be correctly inserted onto the bushing.

So, in your parts diagram, the alloy part is #9. These are on both sides, symmetrically on the interior part of the turn signal stalks. As mentioned, BMW refers to the part as “ caps”. They appear to be a large type of C clip, to my eye.

It seems the caps are to be a “ press fit” over the rubber bushing on the turn signal stalks, on the inside of the fairing. However, I can’t figure out how to get them to stay in place, on the bushing.

10-4. Perhaps a piece of the bushing is missing. Maybe it broke off and that's why the cap went missing and why you can no longer reinstall the cap - because a piece of the bushing is missing. If you disassemble the other side, you might be able to better understand how things fit together.

Sorry I can't help you with recent experience. My R100S no longer has the factory fairing and I don't recall now how it was set up. I believe I remember rubber eccentrics which allowed you to adjust the fairing by the way they were position over the turn signal stalks. I think this may be where your cap is installed.

Kurt,

I agree, after re reading the installation post, I see that the rubber bushing is drilled off center. I’m going to try to use this adjustment, to “ lock” the alloy piece in place.
I did review the other side installation, and all parts are there. Thanks again.
