Vech those are great words of wisdom. I purchased an aftermarket material/shellac type coil to try and keep it looking authentic- I think now that may have been a mistake. I have ordered from Motorworks one of the type you describe with the additional earth connection. I have a rotor removal tool also on it's way, so I re- align the rotor with the "S" mark etc. Hopefully I'll get a spark then, and at the right time. Than you once again for the help you have given me.

On your (old Bench Mark Works) site, you list the tool for pulling the magneto (and generator rotor as well?), which I understand is a hardened bolt with a portion of the front thread relieved in diameter; you list a lot of other specialty tools as well.

I see no such tools listed on the Max site; did you actually have those tools in stock that Max took but simply haven't listed on their site yet, or did you get them from some other vendor when an order was placed? Does one need to contact Max directly rather than order thru their on-line parts system?

The tool for removing both the armature and the rotating magnet is available, and my old web site is still active, but I just went to my old web site, and they say special order?!??? I had a LOT of them in stock. I cannot believe they have run out of them and have not re ordered them. Give MAX BMW a call, and ask. They are bound to have some in stock, still.

It says it doesn't fit pre 1970 bikes, but it's a starting point for discussion if you give them a call. According to Dan Neiner's Cycleworks site, the rotor puller bolt works on all twins from 1951 to 1995.

I seem to be getting nowhere fast! Removed the magneto body, used the removal tool to take the revolving magneto magnet off. cleaned up everything( not much to clean actually- it all looked ok). Set-up the magneto with the S in the viewing window, re-fitted the rotating magnet( which retains strong magnetism) with one line at the 12 o'clock position, the opposite at 6 o'clock position, then lined up the V on the mounting plate with the line, ensuring the S was still central in the viewing window. I then set-up the gap on the breaker points, and fitted the new "Emerald Isle" coil I had ordered(the one with the extra ground/earth lead). Kicked the kick-start, but alas, still no spark. I am really at a loss now.

I'm not certain this would work on a magneto setup...works on a standard coil setup. I would next try pulling a spark plug and keep it in the cap. Put it so that the threads touch the fins. Turn the engine by hand or using the rear wheel while in gear. Watch for spark around the S-mark. If nothing, can you confirm that points actually close and open. If they don't close anywhere, the coil will never charge up.

Hmmm...the more I think about that, it's not going to help. But points must actually open and close.

Yes, the points are opening and closing at the right time, that is- I assume they should open near the S mark?
