Hi guys, Searched for pictures on the web but did not find any good info.
What's the best way to route this wire and where should it connect to the harness?
I mean there is lots of space so there are plennty ways to do this - but what was the original way or what is the best way?
Thanks.

Micha,

The neutral wire comes down and joins the ground wire in a small harness.

The harness runs along the frame member behind the gearbox with two cad plated clips.

It then bends up to wards the battery box and is joined by the two wires from the brake switch.

It goes around the top of the Swingarm between the Swingarm and the frame and up to the junction box on the right side and behind the battery.

I hope these pictures help!

Micha,

After I sent those I remembered that you had an R51/3 that was a few serial numbers away from mine and that you might have been talking about that one. I went down and took pictures of that one as well. I cannot vouch if this was the way the factory did it because the harness was changed at some point in its life to add a brake switch, but it looks like what BMW would have done.

Also, please don't judge me on the dirtiness of the motorcycle, it's my daily vintage rider and I have put more than 5k miles on it just this summer in rain and shine.

The wire runs out of the back-right of the transmission and goes towards the rear of the motorcycle. Mine has a ty-wrap on the frame behind the transmission.
IMG_6026.jpg
It then runs around the cross member and towards the brake switch.
IMG_6027.jpg
It then joins the harness from the brake switch and up into the main block.

My motorcycle (and hence yours) did NOT come with a brake switch and was retrofitted with one, so this is not a factory harness.

I hope this helps....

James
