Here is a genuine rarity. Think it will bring $3500? If you're patient and lucky, you can get an entire /2 for that!

...USA front end tank, repainted and crossover tube and filler neck masking not even removed yet, modern serif font reproduction badges (not correct to the tank, and don't fit properly anyway!), reproduction kneepads that are subtly different from original, all modern production small parts still in plastic bags, modern type hang tag...we are asked to believe that BMW factory sold a tank before removing the masking tape?...I guess these folks will soon be listing the Brooklyn bridge?

Large tank

It’s a BMW mobile tradition tank from the early 2000s. Bar code and box should be a dead give away. Worth no more or no less than a regular period sport tank. Nice tank, but not $3500 nice.

I’ve got the same tank on my

I’ve got the same tank on my 51/3, original without toolbox, so perhaps even rarer.
Not NOS, but made as new.
Bought for aprox. $ 300 , unpainted

I've got an original 1950s Georg Schorsch Meier tank on my barn-find 1952 R51/3 that has not been driven since 1963.
(See photos)
I've always been partial to the original tank on my 1951 R51 but I understand why the guy would have changed it...I do find myself looking for gas stations more often with that tiny 17 liter tank. I was shocked to see what the "correct" tank will cost my for my barn find 1952...apparently somewhere in the range of 1200 Euros might get me an Indian made copy with paint job and pin strips...maybe more.

I figured that I would just go with the current tank butI wonder if perhaps it is worth more than I thought?? Maybe it is possible to trade or sell it and end up with the original stock style tank ?

can anybody advise me on what I might hope to see for this original tank ? or how best to proceed ?

note that it also had the correct Gorg Meier handlebar mounts which apparently were essential to allow the bars to clear the tank

I can ask from my mates in Greece how much original tanks go for over there, since there are thousands of R51/3s still being ridden. 1200€ sounds a bit too steep for a tank, but I could be wrong.

If I were you I wouldn't part with the Schorsch Meier tank, it's way too cool and probably rare.......UNLESS their value buys you a small island somewhere.

Hi Chris yes, I've noticed

Hi Chris
yes, I've noticed that lots of the old parts are coming out of Greece. Good for guys looking for parts but always worries me when this means a bike is being stripped down and sold off. I guess there must be examples where the bike is just too far gone to save but a shame all the same.
yes. if you get wind of a R51 tank I would be interested. prefer to have a real BMW rather than an Indian copy. I've had good luck with several Indian made Norton ES2 tanks but would rather not tempt fate and just get a real BMW tank.

I agree...the Meier tank does look great and I would never be able to afford another. I won't rush into this...and the extra milage capacity is attractive. It is just that the extreme tapered shape of the 1951 tank looks so darned good.

I've realized that I will have to sell off my beautiful '51 R51/3 to finance this job...my wife is happy...me less so (grin)

please do let me know if you get a lead on a tank.
