Hello,

I have been working on this R90 for over a year now and have finally gotten it close to being ready to hit the road. I still have a few issues remaining, one being the S fairing installation. I am wondering if having the side marker lamps all the way up against the metal washers with the U shaped slots is correct? Something about it just doesn't seem right. I have the installation instruction booklet from BMW, but it still isn't clear to me. I don't have access to another bike to compare either. Any pics would be appreciated if my installation is incorrect. Thanks!! At the bottom is a pic as it sits today

From the pictures I can find, it would seem like the signal should be another 10-15mm out to the side. Phil Hawksley's site has some photos:

The turn signal stalks for the R90/6 and R90S have different part numbers. For the R90/6 it is 31421233941; for the R90S it is 31421233943. I can't seem to find any dimensions listed.

Can't post a picture as I'm not a dues paying member, but according to BMW instructions for S fairing installation the signal pods look to be snug up against the fairing. And that's how they are on my bike. See the picture at the beginning of the attached file.

JT---It looks like you have the shorter signal stalks that come with the unfaired bikes. The front turn signal stalks for the S-faired motorcycles are perhaps an inch longer than those for the unfaired bikes. The longer stalks are still available from BMW---but prepare yourself for a radical cashectomy.

Sorry for the delay in responding and thanks for all the responses. I already had the cashectomy and installed the longer stalks. I am beginning to wonder if I need different signal casings. The ones I have are flush on the outside and mount from the inside, if I don't push them against the plate/washer with the U shaped cut out will just fall off. The directions Lincoln posted are way better than the ones I have and show the signal cases with the outside mounting screw. The R100S has that style as well.

It's been a few years (OK, like close to 20), but I've had three R90s with S-fairings, and all had front turn signal pods that were identical to the rear pods---black plastic, that were clamped onto their respective signal stalks by hardware that was inside the pods. I thought the only ones with outside clamping screws were the aluminum signal pods from the '74 and the earlier /5 bikes. I don't clearly remember the "plate/washer with the U-shaped cut out" that you mention, or its position in the assembly. Sorry.

I just purchased a R90s fairing with a new windshield. I got all the hardware installed and measured a 11 1/4" between the new signal arms and it matches the fairing. The instruction guide mentions that the fairing will fit on R60/6 but when it mentions to bend the fairing to make it fit over the other signal arm, it does not budge easily and afraid to crack the fairing. Should I loosen off the top spring and headlight sleeve to rotate the arm to make it fit thru the fairing hole? I also was wondering how to ground the signals. The hole in the headlight bracket sleeve is big enough only for one wire. Is it grounded to the outside with wire poking out?
The mirror mounts are 17" apart and so is corner to corner of fairing. Will it interfere?

I was able to grab a picture from Max Motorcycles and tried to figure out the order of hardware to install the fairing. The pic is attached and before I install the fairing, I think 2 washers go on the stalks first, then the fairing. Once the fairing is on the stalks, you place flat rubber washer followed by the U-shaped metal washer then the turn-signal casings. The mount inside the casings is lame in my books. Why the stalk was not threaded for a large washer instead of a pressure ring with 2 screws, makes it wobble. I think if you pull enough you can really pull them off with some ease I think. If the stalk does not reach far enough into the casing, you can always manipulate washers on the inside of the fairing to give you an extra 2mm.
