Stainless Steel Exhaust

Post by Darryl.Richman »

I don't believe you can get a truly original looking stainless system, for a couple reasons. I'm not aware of a stainless system that has seams on the muffler that look original. Also, stainless headers don't "blue" the way the original chromed mild steel does, but instead turn a warm, golden color.

R69S silencers in Stainless steel are available from a company called Armours in Bournemouth, England. They are correct copies of the original silencers complete with the correct dimples. I have a pair on my 69S. They are from memory £ 260 sterling. Armours advertise in Classic Bike Magazine which I'm sure is available in the US.

Cheers

I noticed that companies, like EPCO, don't include those seams on the mufflers. Do the ARMOURS exhaust include the seams like the originals?

Thanks,

Looks like Keihan Systems in the UK sells the real McCoy ... full stainless system, seams and all. This appears to be the best option so far.

I'm thinking of replacing my original exhaust system with a stainless steel one for my 1969 R69S. I'm interested in an OEM-type system -- as close to original as possible.... .

Is keeping the original sound level also important? I have had three SS mufflers on R69S bikes - Breakwell & Greene, Overlander, and EPCO. They are louder than stock.

I can testify that the EPCO mufflers are very loud. Some like the sound, but I don't, so I ordered correct chromed-steel replacements from Germany and when they arrive I will either donate my stainless ones to my brother or peddle them on ebay.

I have Overlanders....but I ride my bike...so I really don't care about seams...the stainless will never rust and should last my lifetime... yes they get a yellow/brown tint...looks nice...
Overlanders are available with stock or loud baffels...mine are the quiet ones and seem to be just fine....

99% of the people who look at the bike don't know the seams are missing and that other 1% have show bikes that they never ride..

Here's an update on what of done ...

I purchased the Keihan system and, so far, looks like the right choice. The system is beautifully made and has all the right seams like the OEM system. It looks completely stock ... except for the slight yellow shine of stainless!

Spent quite a bit of time yesterday fitting it all together on the bike. Getting everything aligned quite right is an exercise in patience. A bit more tedious than anticipated.

Once I finish the other work on the bike, I'll tighten everything up and start it up and report back on the sound.

Please do post back about the sound of the Keihan pieces. I have a set of EPCO mufflers, and would consider trading up to something a bit quieter. Do you have some contact info about Keihan?
