OEM BMW paint

Post by ThompsonJP »

I have a chance to buy some black OEM BMW paint, which is what I'd like to paint my 1974 R90/6. Problem is the guy selling it knows about as much about the paint as I do. Next to nothing.
Can anyone help me answer a few questions about the paint:
- Is the paint good quality?
- How old is too old to be safe buying? (many of the cans are unopened)
- Other than primer, does the guy have what I need for a complete job?
- Lastly, what's a fair price for this? (He's asking $125 for the whole lot.)

Thanks, here are some photos of what's available.

I put the part number from the two boxes into RealOEM. It suggests that paint was for '76-85 bikes.

I also see "532" on the box. According to Snowbum's website, he narrows it down to '77-78 only and indicates the pinstripe color is 104 or gold.

But, it's your bike and if you have any skills at this, it might work. I can't say if it's any good at this point. I've always been reluctant to use something when it gets to be "old". Heck, I can't/won't even drink milk if it's after the "use by" date!!

That sounds very reasonable for the paint. The one thing that I noticed is that it is a metallic paint and your bike probably had a non metallic paint on it and that's why it is not listed for that year. I would also ask if it has been stored where it didn't freeze.

I think I'm going to purchase it. I'm much less worried about being period correct. I just want a nice black with possibly gold pinstripes.

The BMW paint I'm familiar with (70's-80's) was Glasurit lacquer. Make sure any existing paint is lacquer compatible.

Lead?

Post by Airhead77 »

Do you know if these paints from the 70's include lead (unless you aren't concerned about it)?

Can't you still buy the original colors fresh from Glasurit?

I'm pretty sure you get the right colors from Holt BMW in Athens, Ohio. It's Glasurit paint. Snowbum has other sources on this page:
