11150043140 Air filter

Post by Wynand »

Would appreciate if someone can share some light on this part. Can't find it on my R50, yet all parts diagrams show it up to R60.

Is this an insert within the bigger air filter housing? Comes with a "spring" and bolt to secure it. A picture of how it should be fitted will help a lot, thanks.

I've never seen this actually

Post by schrader7032 »

I've never seen this actually installed, but I think it is part of the carb preheat system that resided under the half-moon cover on the top of the engine. I believe this was eliminated in the mid 60s from what I read. There was a conduit which let warm arm thru the filter and to the carbs. There was a slot in the top if the engine casting that pulled are in from the front engine cover. But it was then closed in future engine cases. Without the air flowing in thru the front engine cover, it was thought that excess might have built up around the magneto and coil, contributing to hard starting issues.

Filter

Post by wa1nca »

didnt know it was used to preheat incoming air, thought is was used to create a negative vacume to increase air flow from the front of the engine cooling the electrics
Pic is from my r51/3 engine
Not sure when it was not used anymore maybe /2
Would like to know more if anyone has more info

Filter

Post by pokie »

As far as I know, this filter was used on all the /2 models. This sort of thing was even used on the /5 and /6 models, but without the filter. The system was designed (at least from what I was told) to keep an air flow over the electrics in the front cover to help keep things cool. A filter was added to the /2s because the air flow bypassed the air filter, where-as on the /5s and /6s the flow was put through the air filter.

Airfilter housing and knob color

Post by Wynand »

Thanks, I located it on my R50 and appreciate the explanation on the workings.

In terms of colour, the /2 Barrington Manual recommends Krylon "Dull Aluminum" and Krylon Grey Primer for the air filter housing. Struggling to get hold of it, only finding Rust-Oleum products on the shelve... Wondering if it would match the Krylon. Dull Aluminum is not always the same jumping between different brands.

The manual says nothing about the bolt/knob that holds the housing in place. I have seen black ones and chrome ones. From original R50 pictures and Duane's website I assume the knob should be the exact finish (dull aluminum) as per the housing, with the shaft just bare polished metal?

Air Filter

Post by pokie »

The body of the air filter should be silver, so should be the knob unless the knob is Bakelite, then it's black. The shaft of the knob is raw. Don't forget to lube the choke after you paint the body or it may rust closed. I have even used a "hammer lacquer" to give a nice effect. The filter bodies never came from the factory chrome, folks just found it easy to remove them and have them "customized".
