First slinger clean and general tune up

Post by schrader7032 »

Congratulations...let the "bonding" begin!

There's no oil filter...that's the slinger's job. There is a guy in Australia, Petere Gibbs, who markets a filter for the /2s. It replaces the sump pickup screen and resides inside the oil pan.

If I were to do this job myself (and I wouldn't given my lack of experience deep inside engines), I would get two things. One is a puller and a video. Cycleworks sells both of these:

Gear oil...something of a controversy. It's been suggested that the /2 bikes have sufficient bronze bushings, etc., in the tranny (possibly the final drive) that are damaged by the latest GL5 hypoid gear oil. If one subscribes to that, then it's best to get GL4. 80w90 should be fine. Same gear oil is used in the tranny, shaft, and final drive.

Engine oil...another big controversy. Do some searches...it's been discussed here. My take is that you need an oil meant for older flat tappet engines. That means something with an API rating of SG...possibly SH. These oils have higher levels of ZDDP which are signficant anti-wear additives.

For valves and seats, I went with BMW parts...at least my mechanic ordered them from Germany...not sure of his actual source.

Bearings...again, Cycleworks carries what you need, along with gaskets:

You could look at the parts fiche and figure out what you need, too.

One thing that you should be aware of is the relationship between the cam and crankshaft gears. The engine case is stamped with a number on the upper right side as you look at the bike. This number describes the "fit" between these two gears. If the fit is too loose, the gears will wear considerably. If too tight, the engine won't turn freely, creating lateral forces. BMW fit two gear sets into the bike upon assembly that worked well and then stamped the case. Over time, the relationship between the centers of the cam and crankshaft change. IIRC, they tend to get closer together due to the outward forces of the firing stroke...as this tends to pull the cylinders from the bike, the vertical direction tends to decrease to compensate.

AFAIK, the only way to do this properly is to be able to substitute various gears until the proper mesh is determined. I don't think you can measure and then order the gears. There was a good discussion on this here:

At best, you can rebuild your engine and see if the gears work OK together.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Does anyone have more info on Petere Gibbs? Can't seem to track him down.

I have this email address:

gibbsp@bigpond.net.au

Not sure about the Petere...I've seen him spell it both ways.

Another guy downunder is Jim Vonkas at:

jimvonkas@gmail.com

Jim's got an interesting website at:

That should get you going!!

Anyone else gone down the path of SKF toroidal bearings or similar?

I'd be great if they were a straight swap but it looks like theres a fair bit of extra engineering gone into making them fit. Not something I am ready for at the moment.

Bike looks good after a clean.

I have made myself a list of parts I might need for the first slinger clean, engine tune up and recommission. Am I missing anything - is there something that I should do while I am in there?

I'm waiting on a barrington manual - but I'd like to put a parts order in before that arrives.

+Full gasket kit (including drive shaft seals)
+push rod and inlet manifold rubbers
+oil filter?
+Gearbox oil (same as drive shaft oil?) - any recommendations?
+engine oil - any recommendations?
+hose clamps
+bearings...Is there a list somewhere?
+stainless valves (blue moon scooter)
+Valve seats?
+stainless engine and trans nuts (bluemoon scooter)
+stainless valve cover nuts (Bluemoon scooter)
