/5 kickstand removal

Post by djg »

Anybody have any useful tips or procedures for removing the stock sidestand on my 73 R60/5? I'm attempting to install a Brown sidestand to replace my bent stock unit. Thanking you in advance and appreciate your efforts.

If I am correct, your bike has a stud welded to the frame the side stand swings on. To remove the side stand you have to unfasten the front engine mount bolt and slide it out to the right until you can pull the side stand off the stud. Good luck. St.

It's hard to believe that anyone thinks they can improve upon a /5 side stand. :)

The early /5's had a role pin that secured the side stand to the pin. I guess the later ones had that goofy contraption that should have held it in place. I will say that five out of five /5's that I have had the weld on that pin break causing the pin to wobble and the side stand appear to be bent or defective. Check that first and save yourself some $$ and time replacing the OEM unit.

I'll take another look at my /5 when I get back to VT. Thanks to all for the info and I'll follow up when I get this done.

Yeah, the pin is welded to the frame and is prone to breaking. Sucks because to fix it properly once broken the stud or pin needs to be tack welded to the frame again. There goes the paint for that area.

A broken pin means a wobbly un stable side stand. St.
