Second petcock

Post by weh8127 »

Anyone have experience with adding a second peacock to a SM sport tank that has to be painted anyway? This is a conversion rig with an R 75 engine and I'm worried about sufficient gas flow under load with a heavy sidecar and passenger. Anything special I need to know?
Many thanks.

You should place it a bit further outboard than the original bung to ensure sufficient clearance with the engine. The crossover tubes were originally brazed in. I didn't remove paint to confirm if the original bung was also brazed. I brazed the new bung in no problem. Instead of fully removing the crossover tubes and then having to plug a large hole in sheet metal, I cut the tubes close to the tank, made tapered steel plugs, and then brazed those in.

I just gas weld the new stabbing on and weld up the holes for the crossover pipe, no problem at all.

Did you fabricate the bung or are they available pre threaded?

I have owned a sidecar rig with a conversion since the 1975's. I converted it with R100RS motor and transmission plus all the wiring. I had also thought about two petcocks. I have never had problems with one petcock. My motor is the 1979 1000 with 40mm carbs. My sidecar is a Bender/Floran. I have had a Hollandia and a Ural on it since doing my first conversion. The Bender is lighter than a Steib but still pretty heavy. Last year I went to the RA rally in Maine. It was a 1000 miles each way. Had no problems with a 7-day trip. Bike ran great. I am getting up in years and there is security with a 3rd wheel. That said, it may not be for everyone. I do keep up with traffic though.

One has to get use to sidecar riding, but it not bad if you start slow.

I have not opened the forum for many years. It is good to here, it's still going. Will try to track of it.
