3 hole 6v electronic regulator for R50/2 install help

Post by Sikamore »

Hello

I am sure these are commonly installed and I am hoping that someone can help me with install instruction. I think Yellow wires are "Field Windings" and Red are 30/51, I am unsure which one ( maybe one of the yellows " is "61 brush". Basically I am clueless but I am attaching a pic for reference.

I have installed 4 of the aftermarket electronic regulators in my bikes, and they all work perfectly. The B+ you connect BOTH RED wires into, the field is the BLUE wire, and every regulator I have installed requires you to take the resistor element OFF of the generator. You put the yellow wire connected to the TOP brush into the brush connector. If anyone else can chime in and correct me, this AFAIK is the correct install method. Make sure battery is disconnected when doing any work.

I see that there are “black” wires attached to both the red wire junction as well as the upper brush connector. You can also leave the red wire and yellow brush wire in situ and use those as a connection to your regulator (?) and simply remove the blue wire for your field connection , since the “black” wires are already at the regulator. Don’t mix them up , and don’t forget to remove the resistance element.

Well.. Damn.. I think I hooked it up wrong and fried it. Hopefully no other damage. I took a quick spin and the battery drained and regulator is hot.

The BLUE is supposed to go into the field the B+ is connection to both red wires and brush is black wire connected to yellow upper brush, you put the “yellow” into the field where the blue should be.

You will have to be patient with me I am a little slow on electrics. If I switch the Blue wire into the terminal where the Yellow is currently ( no pun intended) where does the yellow then go? I thought it was the field wire because the original unit had a "F" on the termination where it terminated.

I just re read, the Yellow goes where Blue was. Do you think I fried the unit?

You will find out once you hook it up. The “yellow wire” is coming from the top brush connection, it looks like you have a black wire connected at the same connection at the brush, and can use that for the BRUSH slot . It looks like you put the yellow wire into the field where blue should go and the brush connector you used the black wire coming from the same place as the yellow wire (which should work, since they look to be on the same circuit) . Once you put in the key you should see the red light and with revs light should go out, if not then you fried the regulator.
Main thing is the BRUSH should be connected to the top brush connector at the generator , don’t worry about the yellow wire at this point if the black wire originated from the top brush connector.Leave yellow wire disconnected.

Thanks, I don't think I would've figured this out. If I leave the yellow wire disconnected there will be an empty terminal? The red and green lights come on... although now the red light wants to stay on. I wonder if I killed the battery as it doesn't seem to hold a charge. I will leave it on trickle and check tomorrow .
