Painting Cylinders

Post by mcsherry1328 »

Some time ago (six months) I saw an article with a few pictures of a BMW cylinder being dipped in Tamco black paint. This was done instead of spraying on a finish. Now, I can't find the article anywhere. Wondering if any of you remember seeing it ? Not sure where I saw it, maybe here, or Facebook BMW sites. Appreciate any help on locating this information. Thanks, Michael

After searching for some time I have decided to try this cylinder paint project myself. I dipped the cylinders in chassis paint mixed with hardener. It looks beautiful but am anxious to try them out on a running engine. This is what I have.

It's not too thick is it? I'd be concerned that might interfere with the heat dissipation.

That looks AWESOME! I just finished my R5 restoration and I used Tamco's products. Epoxy DTA primer, building DTM primer, and single stage gloss black. I am a newbie painter so any problems I had were not a product problem :). It's good stuff.

This was the original Facebook post from Tim Stafford I think.

Nicely done!

Thanks so much for including the facebook post. That is the one I searched for and couldn't find. The paint when mixed with the hardener was quite thin. After I dipped them and made certain there was paint covering the entire cylinder up in the fins I hung them horizontally from my wheel truing stand using a wooden dowel. I rotated the dowel and let the excess drip off until the paint started to harden which didn't take long. The finish looks beautiful.
