R75/5 Odometer Went Backwards

I was out Sunday on my 1973 R75/5 LWB. The bike has just over 23k miles. I got it with 19k miles. The ten thousand digit was a bit gimpy and was actually between the 2 and 3. In other words you couldn’t see the whole 2 in the twenty thousand column. When it changed from 19 thousand to 20 thousand it was ok but then at some point the 2 moved slightly. But everything still worked.

But I was riding Sunday and I looked down and the odometer lost ten thousand miles. Instead of saying 23,348 it now says 13,348. Everything — speedometer, odometer, tachometer — are all still working fine.

I intend to send the speedometer unit to have it serviced. However, do I need to worry about operating the bike in the meantime? I guess the worry is that the internal gears and workings of the speedometer/odometer/tachometer unit may need servicing and further operation may mess it up. On the other hand, the Bike is running great and the speedometer unit is working so why not wait until I have it serviced?

Any advice?

You could unscrew the speedo cable from the back of the instrument until you're ready to send it out. You'd still have the tach.

I rode the bike to the shop. The odometer and speedometer were still working. Will send the speedometer unit off to be serviced.
