If the engine number is to be believed, and it looks correct with the roundels on either side, that number appears to be for an R12 engine. I typed the number into the box on the left side of the screen to show where the number fell.

That is an R12 motor and transmission. The number is relatively early, and the heads are the prewar style. It would be nice to see the stampings on the front right of the motor and also under the right cylinder.

Based on not seeing the Waffenamt stamp (a tiny eagle) stamped in the middle of the W of BMW, this would seem to be a civilian bike.

Thanks for the help Darryl

Congrats on having matching case halves. Maybe you can hunt up another early head for the left side (that's a war issue item). Do you have the magneto for it?

There was two old bosch magnetos but i dont know what they are for, the numbers on the first one was E1 No 3296903 DB57 and the other one says D1B LS44 No 83306.
I dont know what i should do with the engine since i dont have any use for it, is it worth anything if i was looking to sell it?

These engines definitely have value, depending on condition of course. BMW built 36k R12s, so there are still a fair number around, and people are always looking for parts. Things that will help determine value are: does the engine turn over freely? does the kickstarter work and does the transmission shift? are the cylinders inside free from rust? are the castings cracked or broken anywhere? A complete motor and transmission is probably worth at least $2k
