CAVEAT EMPTOR

Post by Beemer54 »

I came across this letter from Bob Porecha in the December issue of The Airhead Ezine. If there's anyone out there who doesn't know Bob then he's the U.K.'s longest surviving BMW specialist. He's in his seveties now but still working because it's a job he loves. He's given much of his life over to BMW's and built his reputation over many decades. He's the U.K. equivalent of Vech or Duane. It appears now that this hard-earned reputation is now being abused for the gain of others. This is an issue which demands as wide an audience as possible and Bob has given me permission to post it here. He would like it shared as widely as possible:

I thought my recent experience with the so called " classic BMW supplier/specialist,” Unit 56 might be of interest to future buyers who are looking to purchase a bike from them.

A few weeks ago I had a couple of phone calls from prospective buyers of an R50 which had been listed on Ebay by Unit 56 .
Unit 56 claimed that the engine had been “rebuilt by Bob Porecha" and that they had my invoice to back their claim.
I emailed and informed them that I do not know anything about this bike and I did not recall rebuilding the engine. I asked them also to remove my name from their advert. To this they replied by email that if I was to send them my email address they would scan and send me a copy of my invoice!
I did this but nothing more was heard from them so I emailed again. This time they asked my fax number so that they could fax a copy to me. I supplied my fax number and full postal address. Again nothing came.
Finally, I emailed again advising them that if I had not heard within the next 3 days, I would be left with no choice but to go the motorcycle press, social media and ebay to inform people of what they are up to. Their reply to this was that that they would put a copy in the post.
Need I say again that I am still waiting for it and if I was to get in touch with them , I know what the answer will be " It must have got lost in the post " !
Their last emailed reply was in language which is not suitable for printing, but they did remove the listing from Ebay.
They are misleading customers using my name and reputation to sell their bike.

So customers you be the judge and be warned before you part with your hard earned cash with them. Make 100% sure that what they are claiming is true.
