Do you have those clips that Brooks shows? I don't see what a washer does in that situation. The concave ball part of the lever fits over the ball on the bike's lever. That clip is designed to keep the two parts together...looks like the two parts snap together.

What does EME have to say about the installation? As I said, I have the spring clip.

Kurt,

Thanks for taking the time to answer. I may not be describing clearly, what my question pertains to. The clips are already in place, and the ball is secure to the threaded rod.

What I am referring to, is the small, threaded part, that attaches to the gear linkage. That part has to be attached with a nut. So, my question is regarding that particular part, as to where the wave washer goes.

Well, it makes sense that the wave washer would go on first on the stud and then the nut would go on next and squeeze on the washer. The purpose of the washer is to act as a deterrent for the nut to back off. I don't see why the wave washer would go on the ball side.

wave washer goes against the nut, as Kurt says to prevent the nut from backing off.

LOL, to be honest I don't think I even have wave washer on my shift linkage. Lots of wave washers wave goodbye to me in my garage and I am just too impatient or lazy to replace them. St.

Thanks guys, makes sense to me:)

Here are the actual parts I got from EME. They also sent me a nifty screwdriver!

Looks good. Technically, the wave washer as positioned is upside down. I make it a point to have the concave side meet the nut. Especially on painted surfaces where the washer is used. When the nut comes down to meet the washer, the "points" of the washer contact the nut first and the nut pushes them down. If the washer were reversed, those points would be touching the painted surface and would scratch the paint as the nut flattened the washer. Obviously there aren't painted parts in this situation, but might as well have a set way of using them. Clearly, this is my opinion! Hee Hee!

Kurt,

That makes sense. I realize that which side the wave washer goes, is probably a trivial issue. But, I have enjoyed this R100 S, and whenever possible, like to make things right on it.

Again, thank you guys for your valuable input on this.

I discovered today, as I was starting to install the new gear linkage, with the threaded ball. The bore on the gear levers, where the threaded part neads to go, is too small, for the new part to fit.

So, option #1, is to go back to the old rod and clips, that already were installed. Option #2, is to drill out the holes, to a slightly larger bore, so that the new gear piece fits, and lock it down with the wave washer and nut.
