Rattle can paint match?

Post by OldCrow »

Hello Everyone, I’m working on the fairing of my 1981 R100RT which appears to have a one year paint code of 520, a smoke dark green metallic. First off, this isn’t a museum or show bike, I do IronButt rides in all weather short of snow/ice. The bike had been dropped moderately hard on the left upper fairing by the PO. I have this fairing off to repair a poor fiberglass job and do some other work.
So my question is, is there an over the counter rattle can color that comes close to matching the OE Green Metallic?
I might even try getting the smoke effect now that I’ve got an idea of how it was done :) But basically I just would like to keep the UV off the fiberglass this spring.
Thanks for or suggestions or ideas. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas season.
Edward

Is the code you are talking about the one on the rear fender under the seat? If so, that is not really a paint code per se but a paint scheme code, it combines the paint color, and pinstripe colors into a BMW code.

So, take a look at this website and see if you can make out the paint code.https://bmwmotorcycletech.info/pcodes.htm

RS bike paints from the UK - exact match and available in rattle cans.

That should take you to your color group.

Hello srankin, I found the code(520) on a small sticker affixed under the fuel tank aft end. Sadly the stickers on the rear fender under the seat are in poor condition and not legible. I had found the code match on Snowbum's site and my bike's color is a Smoke Green with Gold pinstripe and not been reshot.

Hello Jim K in PA, That looks like a great source for exact matching. I’m just looking for close enough. Just curious if anyone had used a stock color from from a USA source, e.g. Rustoleum, Duplicolor, etc.
Thanks
Edward

Ah, my friend had the exact color bike for a while. Very pretty and RARE.

I don't know of any of the off the shelf paint companies making a paint that would come close to matching.

Here may be another source for the code. Good luck, St.
