I found one source with an answer to brightwork/ fasteners. The factory-reprinted shop manual states the following in the tightening torque specifications.

The surface condition of fasteners and engine parts are as follows. Phosphate treated, Galvanized treated, Cadmium treated. I hope this helps others and restoration.

For what it's worth, I purchased a dealer inventory a few decades ago. Hundreds of the old BMW paper bags full of nuts, bolts, etc. for everything from early post war through /7. About 99% of everything /6 and earlier was cad or black oxide with a very small amount zinc plated (likely later inventory orders). Parts exclusive to /7, K, etc. were mostly zinc. I would occasionally find a mix of cad and zinc plated parts in the same bag (likely a restock order mixed with an earlier one). I worked for a short period at a dealer in the mid-late 70's and don't recall ever seeing anything zinc plated at that time, but that's a while ago and memory is a funny thing :).
Hope that helps.
Thanks.

Thanks Chuck, Black oxide is most likely the equivalent to the phosphate treated. So the original /5 fasteners were cadmium.
