/5 side panel question

Post by cwf »

Does anyone know which sidepanels were fitted to /5s 1970-74 and if there was a year with no panels?

Thanks, Charlie.

Ian Falloon says that the '70 and '71 models didn't have side covers. Then it says that the '72 models had the chrome panels. Then in '73 the side panels came painted either black or blue...suggests they were optional.

In the Schwietzer book, it says that that the chromed panels were introduced in the 3rd quarter 1971. Sort of goes with Falloon as the 3rd quarter of 1971 is the start of the '72 models.

In RealOEM, it says that the side panels (black or blue) were used up to 9/1972. Not sure how to interpret that.

In any event......ALL side covers on the /5 models were Chrome. Only the detail, within the stamping was painted.....FYI

EDIT> The Chrome side panels were ONLY offered on the /5 motorcycles WITH the TOASTER TANK. First offered in the 1972 model year. Earlier model /5 years, had NO PROVISION (attachment tabs) welded to the original, factory sub frames.
