Ignition Tip

Post by cbclemmens »

I was using the static method to check the timing on my R75/5. With the plugs sitting on the jugs, ignition on and turning the engine with a hex key on the alternator bolt, I noticed that the left plug did not spark. When cranking the engine with the starter it sparked just fine. So i unscrewed the plug bonnet and noticed the contact looked corroded. I cut a 1/4 inch off the plug wire to get a fresh section of wire, coated the wire with high vacuum silica grease and screwed the bonnet back on. I did that to both sides. - What a difference! The spark was strong with the hand cranking, and the bike ran a lot better - especially at low RPM.

Just passing this along in case it helps someone else.

Silicone (dielectric) grease is ok for corrosion resistance on low voltage (12V) connections but it shouldn't be used on HV connections.

Thanks, but I didn't apply it to the contact, just on the outside of the plug wire to help the boot slide into place and water proof that joint.

As was mentioned before, and is a common misconception, dielectric grease does not conduct electricity.

A good anti corrosion conductive lubricant is NO-OX-ID Electrical Contact Grease: https://www.sanchem.com/electrical-cont ... icant.html
