/5 Muffler question

Post by wbmoore »

Does anybody KNOW if Cigar style mufflers from a 1973 /5 will fit on a 1976 R90/6 ??? Has anybody actually done that swap ? Is it a straight bolt-them-on swap ??? Thanks.

They should fit but if the /5 is a short wheelbase bike they may come up a little short in relation to the back wheel.

You know, I've never seen anyone do that. I've seen /6 & /7 mufflers on a /5, presumably because /5 mufflers were harder to find. I like your idea. I would think it should bolt straight up. The pipe diameter is the same, so it's just a matter of lining up the frame mounting points. As mentioned, just pay attention to whether there are any options related to long vs. short wheel base from the /5.

Do /5 cigar-style mufflers bolt right on to a 1976 R90/6 ?

Yes they do.

Werner, here ya go. They are not OEM BMW but they fit in all the right holes and don’t bump into anything they’re not supposed to. They’re for a ‘69-‘72 /5. I’m hoping their sound is quiet and as original.

Very nice! It's going to look awesome when it's all together! Good call on going backwards with the exhaust, and very original idea. I'm surprised I've never seen that before. I really like it.
