There may have been a clear coat over the satin finish but no, the wheels are polished and then pinstriped. St.

I was looking at some high def photos of some used RS wheels which are for sale. Both F & R have some minor abrasions and scuffs, usable for sure. No where near as nice as the ones that are pictured on JimCarr's post.

Anyway from the used scuffed photos it is clear to see the wheel finish is painted. Looks like a light tan primer then silver matte top coat.

Now I can turn my attention to the hunt for the proper silber paint code, probably the same silver they used on the snowflake mag wheels (sub Wurths Silver Wheel paint). Blue pin stripping paint is 105, same as vehicle paint combo for 77-78, 530 silver metallic with 105 pin stripes.

Scaling off the photos, the pin stripe looks to be 3-4 mm wide (Spokes are 4 mm) with the stripe located 3-4 mm from the edge of the rim so as to be consistent F & R. Being as the R is slightly wider than the F.

Jim,

Now that I have a better idea of the surface finish of the 77-78 spoke rims RS. Would you be able to measure the width of the blue pin stripes and distance from the rim edge to the outer edge of the pinstripe and send me the information.

Gathering the data so I can get my replica rims accurate.

Could they have painted the wheels with the same matte clear they used on the bike parts? That would be my guess.

Sorry about the delay I rode to a rally. The pinstripe is hand done so the width varies from 2 to 4 mm and the distance from the edge of the rim varies from 4 to 5 mm.
