No clear distinct markings for the OT on flywheel...

Post by skyler.robbins »

Hey Gang,
New bike to me.. 1970 R75/5.
Went to do the valve adjustment.. noticed that the OT mark doesn't have an obvious line/dot to match up with on the casing mark.
Do you just line it up the best you can centered in the hole?

My R60/2 has a line on the flywheel and one on the casing that you can definitively line up.

This one however doesn't.. but it does have the line for the "S" mark and a dot for the "F"

Thanks for your suggestions!

I thought there might have been a nick out of the edge of the flywheel. But there's a fairly big range over which the valves are closed at OT. Ensure you know which cylinder is coming up to OT. Then maybe using a chopstick (nothing metal) stick in the spark plug hole and turn then engine towards OT. Note when the chopstick doesn't move out anymore. Keep rotating and note when the chopstick moves back in. Between those two points, near the center, is OT. But just about anywhere in the range when the chopstick doesn't move can be used to set the valve clearances.

Thanks Kurt!
I actually use to use this technic on older Vespas and such.. completely forgot about that.
I think what looks like a chip off to the left side of the flywheel is the teeth

Will go do this now and report back..

Pretty much completed this.. TDC was slightly different from both sides using the chop stick method.
I'm feeling good about where it's at now.
Thanks again!

I am now coining a new term; “Kurt’s Chopstick Method”. Kurt, people 100 years from now will be using it as a way to find TDC!

LOL! They do make spark plug hole "stoppers"...things you screw into the hole and monitor the in/out motion of the indicator. So, either spend $10 at your favorite Chinese restaurant or $10 on Amazon!!
