Road side repair front crankshaft seal

Post by 75R60 »

Hey y’all, I’ve done this before in the comfort of my shop. And I have the tool that removes the stator which I have removed as you can see from the picture. My problem is I’m trying to remove the seal itself so I can replace it. It’s leaking oil into my points and Fallon up my trip :-) anyone have a trick for easy seal removal?

One approach is to use a seal puller...I've seen reference to something by Lisle:

https://www.lislecorp.com/specialty-tools/seal-puller

Go to this page on Brook Reams' page to see one of these pullers in operation...search the page for Lisle:

Another option is to run some sheet metal screws into the hard outside of the seal maybe 180 degrees apart, being careful to not damage the crank surface or go too deep. Then using a slide hammer, pull on the screws.

Thank you Schrader! I managed to get the seal out... prying and pulling
Now... I sank the new seal in too far. How crucial is it to be flush with the casing?

I think that could be a problem...they always say just go to even with the case or how it was initially installed. That way the seal runs on the same area of the crank. If it's deeper, it will run over a rougher area and could tear the seal up and also if too deep, it could hit something behind the seal...not sure what's in there.

I did this seal replacement on my R90/6. A very qualified airhead mechanic gave me some tips beforehand and he was very specifically adamant that the seal was flush with the casing . . .

Thank you everyone for your help. As a follow up, I attempted to pull the oil seal but was afraid of damaging it so stopped short of that. I ended up leaving the seal in place as you can see in the photo and have not experienced any ill affects after 1000 miles.
