R90/6 shift lever conversion

Post by Randolph »

Howdy,
I want to convert a stock R90/6 shift lever to a heel&toe rocking lever 23411239023. The only problem is how does it attach? I was looking at Matt Powdermaker's "custom" bike from the previous post and it looks like he might have fabricated a plate since the plate looks like flat aluminum plate stock.

I was able to find a plate 46711454717 from some 80s bikes that looks like it might work, but I'm not sure it attaches to the frame the same way as the stock foot rest (no "teeth" to mate with the teeth on the frame.

Anyone have experience with this?

TIA,
Randy

How does it attach? Doesn't it just replace the toe-only shift lever with the bolt that goes through the middle into the transmission?

No. It has the adjustable linkage (turnbuckle type) and attaches to a footrest plate.
I have never personally seen that type of linkage but you can see an example in the pictures of the bike in the previous "custom bike" post.

The custom R90S for sale? This picture? I have the same setup on my completely stock /7. I guess I'm not following the need.

So my /7 has #8 from the parts diagram as well as #12 turnbuckle. Maybe your shift lever is more like #2 in the diagram. Seems to me that you ditch #2 and bring the parts up to the /7 level but instead of #8, you find a heel-toe shifter instead.

Yes! I'm trying to find what the part number is for the footrest plate. I can't find it in the fiche. It's not in the "46-Frame, Fairing, Cases" nor the "23-Transmission" sections. BMW may have hidden that part somewhere else.

If I am reading this right, you are talking about two different styles of shifting levers and mounting methods. The heal and toe rocker lever was found on the 79 R100RT bikes and maybe a few other years and models about then. It mounts to the foot peg and as you said, has an adjustable mechanism linking it to the shaft on the transmission. It will not fit with your R90/6 unless you fabricate parts to make it fit.

The shift lever on the R90/6 comes straight off the side of the transmission and I don't believe (unless there was a special police bike lever) there ever was a heal and toe shifter available for those bikes.

I would think a good fabrication/machine shop would be able to make something for you. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. St.

I tried finding the post from Matt Powdermaker's custom bike with no luck. If you provide a link or picture of what you are writing about it would help.
If you are talking about this bike, viewtopic.php?p=5889#p5889 it is a R90S transmission but the shifting mechanism is off a /7 bike, not the R90S or /6 bikes. It may be possible to fit a /7 style foot peg assembly onto a /6 bike, I don't know for sure as I have never tried it. It is also possible the builder used a /7 frame with a R90S engine and transmission.

Kurt says, the R90/6 shift lever bolts directly to the transmission same as it did on the R90S bikes. All the /7 bikes used the shift lever on the foot peg with the link to the transmission. St.

So nobody knows a part number for the plate. Got it.
I have done an extensive search for it with no joy. I'll have to ask around and find the one person that may know.

Thanks guys,
Randy

I don't know for sure but I would think that the parts from the /7 or the 79 model Steve mentions would swap over.

I don't know what you are writing about when you write "plate". If you can't describe the part, and don't want to link a picture that is fine, your problem not mine. Good luck figuring it out. St.
